In the fall of 2003, the City Council of the City of Wichita Falls passed an ordinance requiring all food service establishments, food serving facilities, and certain other facilities to install and maintain Grease Traps or Grease Interceptors to alleviate the growing problem of grease blockage caused sewer overflow.
There were three compliance dates established. First, all existing facilities which had a grease trap currently installed, had 36 months from the date the ordinance passage (March 18, 2003) to comply with the ordinance. This compliance date was March 18, 2006.
Second, those facilities who had no grease traps at all, were required to install traps to meet the ordinance requirements not later than 18 months after passage of the ordinance. This compliance date was September 18, 2004.
Thirdly, an establishment whose ownership changed, had a major overhaul or remodeling, or any new establishment coming to the City, must comply with the ordinance before being allowed to open/reopen.
Lastly, all permittees were required to acquire and maintain a service contract for the servicing, maintenance, and pumping of their grease traps.
